Peace studies have mostly focused on the construction of “peace” by political or social elites, armed groups and leaders of conflicting forces. Nonetheless, community-based efforts to build peace, however defined, are usually scarcely studied. This has changed in recent years with the “everyday peace” perspective.

In the first HCIAS Wednesday Colloquium of the Winter Semester 2024/2025, Dr. Benedicte Bull, University of Oslo, gave a presentation on Authoritarian Capitalism in Latin America: Causes and Consequences.
Dr. Bull is a professor at the Centre for Development and the Environment at the University of Oslo. Her research interests focus on the relationship between politics, economics and development, and how international conditions affect the possibilities of establishing good institutions that facilitate positive societal changes. Her main focus geographically is Latin America, with a particular focus on Venezuela, especially the relationship between politics and business elites.
